"How To Find A Husband In 37 Years Or Longer" at Stage C is part of the East of Edinburgh Festival at 59 E 59th Theater. In the play by and acted by JJ Pyle, she tells the story of how she grew up and where she is in her life. Pyle uses excellent projection in telling her story (we are taken to New York City, rural Indiana and so forth).
Pyle is basically neurotic, she has made many wrong decisions in her life, particularly whom she has dated. It is no wonder that she questions everything, her father has been married several times, he stands pending indictment over selling weed and he, like his daughter is looking to get married. Pyle does a great imitation of the father, it was one of the highlights of the evening.
A want-to-be actress, Jennifer waits tables in New York City. Things haven't exactly gone her way... her flight to India for her room mates wedding was cancelled, she is in deep debt; she stalks her latest boyfriend and deep down she is miserable.
In this one hour show, JJ Pyle takes us in many directions of her life. Her is where she runs into trouble. Trying to get to much in this hour play tends to confuse the audience at times. When she vacillates from Hollywood, to Indiana and onto New York is where I think the play wallows a bit. Director Mark Cirnigliaro needs to work this period of the show better and Pyle needs to maybe rework this part.
JJ Pyle is likeable enough, talented enough and her show is decent enough. If the rough spots get smooth over, this could be a formidable play. The concept is interesting; very much in tune with today’s society. She captures what’s going on in the information world today. It just needs to be honed a little.
