The problem with "Comeuppance ", and there are many, is that Branden Jacobs- Jenkins, like most young modern writers think, is that if you mention January 6th, guns, Roe vs Wade, climate change, that it is deep theater. Well, it's not.

" Comeuppance " at the Signature Theatre is the latest in woke writing at this facility. Last week I had the misfortune of having to sit through Bernardas Daughters as well. Both plays lack depth, structure and focus in their writing.

In "Comeuppance", the story has 5 friends coming together for a 20 year reunion. The issue in the casting is that all the actors look like they're in their 20's and not around 38 or 39 like they would be in real life. The casting further deteriorates because the audience never for once believes these people would be friends in high school.

Jenkins never established a plot in this two hour fifteen minute intermissionless play. Sure there is mentioning of social issues... back the blue is frowned upon, so is the former president and it goes on and on going nowhere!

Director Eric Ting has the actors somewhere in left field without a mitt; not that he has too much material to work with.

While jokes did land with the younger audience members, I found the humor flat. Even the nexus so called deeper issues were sophomoric and went into the abyss.

The costumes in " Comeuppance " lacked any imagination as far as a theme pattern.

" Comeuppance " is a symptom of what is going on today in off Broadway. The writing has gotten worse over the years. If writers think that throwing up Hail Mary's is the way to write, they are sorely mistaken.

People go to the theater for the most part to escape the reality of the world. Yes, Agiprop is different and so are other genres, but when an audience member gets snippets of social issues like in " Comeuppance ", it exacerbates people's anger as to why they waste their time paying for something like this.

The bias of some of the writings is also questionable both on and off Broadway. How does January 6th compare to the billions it costed taxpayers at the hands of BLM or ANTIFA? How does Roe v Wade compare to the Supreme Court? Like " Bernarda's Daughter ", we get hatred toward the police, white people, anyone who wants to carry a gun legally. These plays all have the same underlying problem, and that problem is that it ridicules the establishment with no substance to back it up.
